Our Spanish Trails®´ Montserrat and Wine Country Day Tours are a well-rounded, 6-hour experience for travelers of all ages in which guests are guided from Barcelona to the impressive Monastery of Montserrat located 45 minutes west of Barcelona and standing at an unexpected 725 mts. /2378 ft. above sea level. Guests enjoy the great views of the Mediterranean coast and western valleys below amidst the astounding, unique rock formations of this holy place that has been the destination to countless numbers of pilgrims and active travellers for a thousand years. Also on the menu of the day’s events are listening to the boys choir sing and visiting the “Moreneta” or black virgin of Montserrat and for who this great place was founded.
Legend has it that about 1000 years ago a wandering Shepard claimed to have spotted the Virgin Mary in a cave on Montserrat. News spread of the holy sitting and pilgrims from far and wide flocked to the sacred mountain. The monastery of the Virgin was founded in 1205 and still tended today by 80 Benedictine monks. The architecture of the monastery and basilica alone are impressive, but even more impressive to visitors when they ascend in the funicular/cog train to the peak of Sant Jeroni at the top of this 1236 meter/4055 feet mountain of stunning rock formations and see the monastery tucked into the jagged rocks below.
Montserrat and Wine Country day trips are groups of only two to eight guests/day and are guided by one of our fun, informative guides who give you a great overview of not only the history of Montserrat but also the history of the Catalunya region. Like all Spanish Trails® day trips, your day is rounded off with a great lunch of great Catalan cuisine in a traditional restaurant. This Montserrat day tour is not your typical coach or mini-coach tour and is catered to both young and old, hikers and non-hikers as well as those with or without specific religious interest. It is just a good day out, really!
