Just before the French border, in the Natural Park of the Albera Mountains, stands the amazingly well-preserved Castle of Requesens. Built by the Counts of Roselló in the 11th Century, the Castle has had several owners, held many different names and undergone various renovations over the last few hundred years. While closed to the public a majority of the time, STA has been granted visitation.

The Castle looms above us

An hour and a half north of Barcelona, we’ll be driving up into the dense woods of the eastern Pyrenees. After rounding one final turn suddenly the Castle looms above us on top of the hill. The next couple of hours are spent exploring the endless passageways and rooms of the huge fortress, and climbing to the top of towers to behold the incredible views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. A leisurely lunch at a rustic mountaintop restaurant provides the perfect ending to the journey.
